The mission of the North Carolina GSK Foundation is to support science, health and education across the state of North Carolina.
Our vision is a healthy and prosperous North Carolina.
Since 1986, the NC GSK Foundation has awarded nearly $100 million in grants supporting science, health, and education across all 100 counties in the state.
As the foundation approached its 40th year, we began a six-month planning process to ensure our work remains relevant in North Carolina’s evolving landscape. Our new five-year strategy both builds on our grantmaking legacy and focuses our resources to meet the moment.
What you can expect:
- A sharpened focus on health and life science career pathways
- Three strategic priorities organized around our five-year intended impact
- A rural and underserved lens applied across our portfolio
- New investment in grantee capacity building
- A commitment to measuring impact across our portfolio

The Foundation was the vision of Glaxo chairman and chief executive, the late Joseph J. Ruvane, Jr. Mr. Ruvane’s vision established and facilitated a stable, long-term source of support for North Carolina – now known as the North Carolina GSK Foundation. Today, the foundation's growth is based solely on investment and market growth derived from its own independent endowment. Since 1986, we have awarded nearly $100 million in grants. We pay approximately $3 million in grants each year to North Carolina nonprofit organizations.
